Mental Health America of Illinois (MHAI), a leading non-profit, statewide organization, has worked to promote mental health, prevent mental disease and improve the care and treatment of those suffering from mental and emotional disorders.
Since 1909, MHAI has been at the forefront of educational and advocacy efforts. We work to improve access to high-quality, affordable treatment for millions afflicted with mental illness, eliminate the stigma that exists around mental disorders. Our three primary goals are to educate, to advocate, and to serve the community.
MHAI is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. We are staffed entirely by teams of dedicated volunteers.
MHAI continues to expand its public policy and advocacy at the state level. Our current advocacy efforts are focused primarily on reducing the number of persons with mental illnesses in prisons and jails, and ensuring that the Affordable Care Act maximizes the quality and quantity of mental health services available in Illinois. MHAI co-founded and currently Chairs the Mental Health Summit (MHS), an advocacy coalition dedicated to improving the mental health system of care in Illinois. MHS develops and supports policy positions in partnership with legislators, state agencies and other not-for-profit advocacy groups. Read More
MHAI hosts a variety of seminars and workshops, including the signature Luncheon Speaker Series. The Luncheon Speaker Series is held at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum at the University of Chicago and is open to all members of the community. MHAI also hosts a variety of special events to promote mental wellness and raise funds to continue to advocate on behalf of persons with mental illnesses. The Outreach Partnership Program is a nationwide initiative of the National Institute of Mental Health’s (NIMH) Office of Constituency Relations and Public Liaison (OCRPL). The program works to increase the public’s access to science-based mental health information through partnerships with national and state nonprofit organizations. Read More
