Welcome to Mental Health America of Illinois

Feel the Rewards of Helping Others

For almost 100 years, Mental Health America of Illinois (MHAI) has been fighting for better care and conditions for people diagnosed with mental illnesses. Our dedicated volunteers work on many diverse projects to help MHAI fulfill its mission. We need your time and support to remain the premier mental health advocacy and educational organization in Illinois.

If you are interested in joining MHAI as a volunteer and a mental health champion, please contact our office at (312) 368-9070 ext.27 for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • MHAI’s Prevention Program seeks qualified volunteers with a background in education to work with school administration, parent groups and teachers who are using our social and emotional learning curriculum.

  • MHAI's Public Education program seeks mental health professionals, consumers, family members and others interested in assisting MHAI with educational and mental health screening outreach efforts, as well as individuals who are willing to join the agency's Speakers' Bureau.

  • MHAI seeks volunteers with special skills in the areas of public relations, marketing and graphic design to assist in the development of educational and marketing strategies and materials for widespread public distribution.

  • MHAI’s Development Department's Special Events Committee is recruiting volunteers to help develop and implement a variety of fundraising events, including our annual Gold Bell Gala.

  • MHAI seeks young professionals willing to become involved with MHAI’s Young Professionals Group to work on educational, outreach and fundraising initiatives.

  • MHAI is always in need of general administrative support during the work week, especially from individuals who have good telephone, computer and filing skills. We hope to find individuals who are able to commit to a minimum of a regular shift of four hours (or more) on a one-day-per week basis.

Share Your Story. The Real Lives: Share Your Story Campaign is a one-of-a-kind project that invites people who struggle with mental illnesses to break the silence and share their stories. We all know how empowering human connections are to those seeking wellness and recovery. By speaking out about your experiences, you help give a voice to the 57.7 million American adults—and as many as one in 10 children—who have a mental health disorder.
