The MHAI Outpatient Commitment for Persons With Mental Illnesses

The MHAI Outpatient Commitment for Persons With Mental Illnesses

On February 24, MHAI held its first educational seminar of the year, “Outpatient Commitment for Persons With Mental Illnesses.” The successful event received overwhelming positive feedback, and more than 50 guests were in attendance. Three speakers presented, including two MHAI board members.

  • Nneka Jones Tapia, Psy.D, Executive Director, Cook County Department of Corrections (MHAI Board of Directors)
  • Mark J. Heyrman, JD, Clinical Professor of Law, University of Chicago Law School (MHAI Board of Directors)
  • Candice Player, PhD, JD, Assistant Professor of Law, Northwestern University

The program discussed the history of outpatient commitment in Illinois and elsewhere, the arguments for and against outpatient commitment, and whether and how it can improve mental health services in Illinois. MHAI was proud to offer two CEUs for social workers in attendance.
