Outpatient Commitment for Persons with Mental Illnesses
Friday, February 24, 2017
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Adler School of Professional Psychology
17 N Dearborn
This program will discuss the history of outpatient commitment in Illinois and elsewhere, the arguments for and against outpatient commitment and whether and how it can improve mental health services in Illinois. Two CEUs will be available for social workers.
For many years the Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code has included provisions allowing a court to order that someone with a mental illness receive treatment in the community. These provisions have not been well-understood and have been used fairly infrequently. However, recently Illinois received a federal grant to increase the use of outpatient commitment in Cook County.
The program will include the following presenters:
- Candice Player, PhD, JD, Assistant Professor of Law, Northwestern University
- Nneka Jones Tapia, Psy.D, Executive Director, Cook County Department of Corrections
- Mark J. Heyrman, JD, Clinical Professor of Law, University of Chicago Law School
Registration is $30. You may pre-register by clicking the button below. For questions, please contact Mark Heyrman.Register Here
